ACW Campaign Rules - Civil War in Virginia

 ACW CAMPAIGN RULES - version 5 7-27-26

SCENARIO

In Virginia during the Civil War SoVA (southern part of the state) sides with the Confederacy and NoVA

(norther part of the state) sides with the Union. The border is just north of Fredericksburg which remains In SoVA.

CITIES AND TOWNS

Each side has 2 factory towns (one is the capital) and 4 other cities. Each city supports one brigade.

FORCES

At the start each side has 6 BRIGADE @12 SP’s each, one in each city.

Note: 12 is a measure of strength only relative to the size of the forces in the rules you use.

Ex: if current SP’s=6, when battle you can only field 50% (6 of 12) of the units allowed.

STRATEGY

1. Randomly choose each side’s TACTICAL PLAN (type of attack strategy)

Each side roll D6 to pick one of the options below.

1) Flank, L or R by 2-3 brigades

2) Even attack.  L,C,R - advance in parallel

3) Center attack   by 2-3 brigades. Split enemy forces.

4) Oblique attack. Slanted up toward L or R (roll D6 to decide)

5) Concentrated rapid attack on ONE objective - hit hard and fast with 2 or more brigades

6) Attack infrastructure - Destroy towns, RR tracks, bridges.

2. Decide the OBJECTIVE(S) of the attack - factory towns, frontal (toward border) cities, weaken/destroy enemy forces,

destroy supply lines and/or infrastructure, just advance and attack when opportunity presents itself.

TURN SEQUENCE

IGOUGO.

1. Roll for CHANCE (see below)

2. Make all order change actions, administrative actions, or recover from low ammo, OOS, etc.

3. Move brigades

4. All battles if any

ACTIONS:  You can take as many of these actions as you wish. No more than one per brigade.

Move

Issue a new order from HQ. Roll D6=4+ or order not received. Try next turn.

Destroy - RR track, bridge. (see note below)

Ransack - town, city.  Remain a turn.

Set up Supply Depot. Remain a turn

Reorg - transfer troops between 2 adjacent brigades

Recover - remove “fatigue” marker that was placed after a battle

Recruit - D6 to add to low unit. If all full, then add to any.

Note: To destroy an infrastructure component, the brigade must be within 3 grids of the target. It sends a detachment (not actual,

just assumed). Then roll D6=4+ to be successful and return to brigade. Else try next turn or stop.

CHANCE

1) Sickness - 1 brigade loses 1-6 SP’s, or

2) Defection - 1-2 brigades lose 1-3 SP’s

3) Confusion of orders - side loses a complete turn

4) Low ammo (random frontal brigade - facing closer to the enemy). D6 = amount of ammo loss. Must roll D6 = or > low ammo amount to continue. Try next turn.

5) Recruit - roll a D6 and add that many SP’s to a brigade.

6) no chance event

MOVEMENT

Brigade:   2 grids on road, 1 grid off road.

Rail: town-to-town one move (assume there is a train engine at the station). Load, move to next station, unload all in one move.

if the enemy holds target station, forces get off train before arriving at the station and travel on land.

There is a road alongside each track.

River: 4, 5 or 6  grids (D6)

Boats can put in water only at ports (each bridge has a small port). Check map for locations.

A brigade can move on river. Assume there are enough boats to move all the troops at one time.

SUPPLY

Each unit must have clear path back to a factory town.

Supply chain is from a factory town to any frontal city or supply depot. To be in supply, a brigade must be no more

than 5 grids from the supply chain. If not, a brigade becomes OOS (Out of Supply). D3= loss of 1-3 units each turn until back in supply chain.

BATTLE

One force attacks another. After attack, each side can restore a % of lost units:  W = ½, L = 1/3.  Loser must then retreat 2 full moves.

After a battle each side is exhausted. Place a “fatigue” marker by each.

Marker must be removed in a subsequent turn before the brigade can advance/attack. If attacked while exhausted, it pays a

penalty of lower dice rolls (depends on battle rules)

VICTORY

One side has achieved its objective or the enemy surrenders.

CAMPAIGN MAP and SUMMARY

1. STARTING POSITION

Each side has 6 brigades placed as shown.

Nova used a balance L,C,R tactical plan. It fought simultaneous battles at Harrisonburg (HB on map), Culpepper (center),

and Fredericksburg (right). SoVA won all 3 battles. It was downhill for NoVA after that.

SoVA used a concentrated Center attack plan. Brigades 4 and 5 advanced northward to the little town just east of Luray.

A supply depot was set up and the advance just continued. NoVA was still reeling from the 3-battles it lost in its attack.

2. EINDING POSITION

NoVA (blue) surrendered after 11 batlles.
